What if every aspect of your salon was beautiful and good?
In the face of wasteful and harmful environmental practices in mainstream salons, it didn’t take long before the founder of Hemp House, Samantha Harron, decided it was time to open her dream salon, one that was sustainable and put the environment first in every way.
Carefully Selected Sustainable Products and Expert Advice in a Warm Professional Atmosphere
Attainable Sustainable Beauty From the Inside Out
Hemp House is a 630 square foot salon and a true testament to green building practices. While we always focus on creating beautiful hair, we can't help but offer a little sustainability education as well.
Hempcrete
The walls of the salon are made from a natural biocomposite material called hempcrete. Hempcrete is created by mixing the hemp stock or "shiv" and a lime based binder to create a mold proof, rodent proof, fire resistant, biodegradable construction product. By choosing hempcrete, we were able to eliminate the use of exterior plywood, building paper, insulation, plastic vapour barrier, drywall and paint. Complementing the hempcrete, we used an all natural lime and sand plaster for our interior and exterior finishes. One of the special features of hempcrete, is that it creates a solid barrier that is beathable, allowing the wall to absorb and release moisture along with the seasons. Normal construction methods use vapour barriers and building paper to try to shield against the changing seasons. Hempcrete works with the natural environment, allowing airflow and circulation within the building all throughout the year. Unlike most materials, hempcrete actually absorbs carbon from the environment, and is therefore considered a carbon positive product. During it's growth and curing process it absorbs or converts carbon instead of releasing it. As hemp grows, it converts carbon into oxygen, as the plant dries and as the hempcrete cures, it absorbs carbon from the surrounding environment, creating what is known as a carbon sink.
The Truth Window
The viewing window inside the salon is a glimpse to the internal workings of our eco-building. This serves as an educational window for our customers as well as a daily reminder of how amazing hemp really is.
Reclaimed Resources
Naturally fallen logs are used for the window framing and stations. The building framing is made partly from reclaimed wood, and the Pro-lock metal roof is entirely reclaimed.
An energy-efficient wood-burning stove as well as the in-floor heating helps heat the salon in winter.
Rain Water Collection
Our rainwater catchment system allows the salon’s water to be used for irrigation around the property. The hair washing sink features an eco-head which removes sediment, rust and sand and reduces water use by up to 65%.
Solar Power
Solar panels generate most of the electricity needed to run our salon. For any surplus, we partner with the local green energy provider.
Skylights provide natural lighting throughout the salon.
Hemp is Different
Hemp has been used for thousands of years for industrial purposes. In the past few years, innovators have figured out how to utilize it as a renewable resource for things like textiles, insulation and plant based plastics. We are a 420 friendly salon which adds to our love of hemp.
Energy Partners
We partner with green Circle Salons to collect, recycle & repurpose our hair clippings, used foils, color-tubes, excess hair color, papers and plastics, glass, to divert them from landfills and waterways. Cut Hair is up-cycled into booms to clean up oil spills in waters worldwide.
Hemp House Partners with Bullfrog energy for any additional power consumption as to offset our carbon footprint that much more. Bullfrog provides 100% renewable energy.
